Fernando Gabeira is a multifaceted individual, boasting a career as a writer, journalist, and former Federal Deputy for Rio de Janeiro from 1995 to 2011. Born in Juíz de Fora, Minas Gerais, he has resided in Rio de Janeiro since 1963. Gabeira is a devoted father to his two daughters, Tami and Maya Gabeira.
Early in his career, he distinguished himself as an editor at "Jornal do Brasil" from 1964 to 1968, impressing his colleagues with his striking writing style, which could be recognized even in his notes. However, his involvement in the armed struggle against the military dictatorship led to his arrest, torture, and exile in the late 1960s.
During his ten-year exile, Gabeira traversed several countries, including Algeria, Cuba, Chile, and Sweden. He witnessed the 1973 military coup that overthrew Salvador Allende in Chile and later portrayed the event on a script for Swedish TV. In Sweden, he worked in journalism, primarily for Radio Sweden, and even drove a subway in Stockholm.
Upon his return to Brazil in 1979, following the amnesty, Gabeira dedicated himself to an intensive literary production, crafting critical analyses of the armed struggle and focusing on individual freedoms and ecology. His books, such as "O Que é Isso, Companheiro?" (1979),"O Crepúsculo do Macho" (1980),and "Nós que Amávamos tanto a Revolução" (1985),revolutionized the field of mentalities and shed light on old Brazilian concepts.
Gabeira's political and journalistic endeavors were marked by several significant events, including the investigation of the Chico Mendes murder, the suspension of the Angra I nuclear power plant due to security concerns, and the world meeting of indigenous people in Altamira, Pará. In 1986, he co-founded the Green Party (Partido Verde, PV) and launched the book "Greenpeace: Green Guerrilla of Peace" in 1988, introducing Brazil to the philosophy and inner workings of the world's largest environmental organization.
Gabeira's political career continued, and in 1994, he was elected Federal Deputy for the first time. He served four consecutive terms, switching parties on several occasions. In 2011, he decided to leave politics, advocating for Operation Car Wash (Lava Jato) and stating that the operation had only exposed the decay of the Brazilian party system.
Since 2013, Gabeira has resumed his journalistic career as the presenter of the TV show "Fernando Gabeira" on GloboNews, in addition to writing a weekly column for "Jornal O Globo" since 2014, effectively closing a chapter in his life.
