Feihong Yu is a talented and accomplished young Chinese actress, widely recognized in the United States for her pivotal role in the acclaimed film "The Joy Luck Club", where she brought to life the complex and tragic character of "Ying Ying", a young mother who makes a heart-wrenching decision after being betrayed by her husband.
Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, Feihong was raised in a family of nuclear engineers and was introduced to the world of dance at the tender age of six, when she began training in Chinese Classical Dance. Her early start in the performing arts laid the foundation for her future success.
In 1989, Feihong enrolled in the prestigious Beijing Film Academy Acting Department, where she honed her craft and developed her skills as an actress. During a vacation in Shanghai, she was introduced to Wayne Wang and the production team of "The Joy Luck Club", who were on a location scout. Despite not initially intending to cast a mainland Chinese actress, they were impressed by Feihong's talent, experience, and striking appearance, and offered her the role of the most tragic character in the film.
This marked Feihong's first trip to the United States, where she was brought to San Francisco to film the movie, which was set in China but shot entirely in the American city. Following her success in "The Joy Luck Club", Feihong appeared alongside Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau in the film "Tian Di".
Feihong returned to Beijing at the invitation of her alma mater, where she was appointed as an Assistant Professor. However, she later moved to Los Angeles in late 1994 to pursue opportunities in English-language motion pictures and television, establishing herself as a versatile and talented actress in the process.
