In 1995, Roel was awarded a Manolo Fabregas scholarship, which enabled him to relocate to Madrid, Spain. Later, he moved to Venezia, Italy, before eventually returning to his native Mexico. However, he soon found himself drawn back to Madrid, where he settled and founded the Madrid Film Institute (Instituto del Cine de Madrid) in 1997.
