Biography

Eric Marciano is a New York-based filmmaker, media designer, and storyteller who has been active in the industry for over three decades. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in filmmaking from the School of Visual Arts in New York, which he earned in 1984, Eric's passion for experimentation and creativity was fostered through his time at SVA.

It was during his studies that Eric developed a love for the art of editing, a skill that would become a cornerstone of his work. In 1984, he founded American Montage, a production company that has successfully completed projects for a wide range of clients, including HBO, Discovery, ESPN, A&E, TLC, PBS, the New York Times, and numerous internet destinations.

Over the years, Eric has had the privilege of collaborating with a diverse array of artists, musicians, and performers, including Galt MacDermot, James Moody, LeRoy Neiman, Fanny Sanin, Gilles Peress, Eugene Richards, Karen Finley, The Blind Boys of Alabama, LaMaMa ETC, New York Theater Workshop, Noche Flamenca, and Mabou Mines/Lee Breuer, to name a few. His body of work encompasses a wide range of genres, including documentaries, multi-media works, corporate events, narrative films, web sites, commercials, music videos, video walls, theatre video design, documentation, video essays, museum installations, and public relations media.

Eric's narrative films, "The Age of Insects" and "Narrowcast", have become cult classics, while his health and wellness-based films on topics such as eating disorders, body image, self-esteem, self-injury, and bullying have garnered numerous awards and accolades. In 2006, he launched the first video-based web site focused on grief and hospice, www.grievingcenter.org, which was awarded the 2007 W3 Silver Design Award.

In 2014, Eric launched the first video-based web site dedicated to New York Off and Off-Off Broadway Theater, and he has been producing numerous projects with the legendary experimental theater director, Lee Breuer, including a documentary on Clarence Fountain, the iconic founding front man for the Blind Boys of Alabama, called "The Book of Clarence".

In 2017, Eric's narrative films were screened and purchased by the Museum of Modern Art as part of the Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978-1983 exhibit and show, with five of his films added to the permanent collection. His latest film is "Shapes of Rhythm: The Music of HAIR and Galt MacDermot", a tribute to the eclectic and soulful composer.
