Biography

Elliott Cook Carter Jr., a renowned American composer, hailed from New York City, where he spent most of his life. His early musical education took place in the 1930s under the tutelage of the illustrious Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Following his studies, Carter returned to the United States, where he embarked on a compositional journey that would span multiple decades.

Initially, his style was characterized by an neoclassical approach, but he later transitioned to writing atonal, rhythmically complex music. His impressive oeuvre, performed globally, encompasses a wide range of genres, including orchestral, chamber, solo, and vocal works.

Carter's later years were marked by an astonishing productivity, during which he composed over 40 works between the ages of 90 and 100, and continued to create music well into his 100s. His remarkable life came to a close at the age of 103, due to natural causes.
