Biography

Edwin August Phillip von der Butz was born on November 20th, 1883, in St. Louis, Missouri. As a young boy, he made his first stage appearance at the tender age of seven in the play "Little Lord Fauntleroy". This marked the beginning of his extensive stage career, which would eventually lead him to the world of film.

In 1908, August made his first foray into filmmaking with the Biograph Company in New York City. It was during this time that he had the opportunity to work alongside the renowned actress Mary Pickford and be directed by the legendary D. W. Griffith. The experience and exposure he gained during this period would serve him well in his future endeavors.

August's next stop was the Lubin Company, where he was cast opposite Ormi Hawley in a series of films. He left the company in December 1912, but not before making a lasting impression on the film industry. Over the years, he worked with numerous early film companies, not only acting in films but also writing and directing his own projects. At one point, he even had his own production company, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit.

August's good looks and charming on-screen presence earned him the title of most handsome matinee idol in a national poll, conducted by a fan magazine. His popularity extended beyond the silver screen, as he even announced his candidacy for president in 1916, with his primary issue being opposition to movie censorship. Although his bid for the presidency was met with skepticism, it was an unprecedented move for an actor to consider running for office.

August successfully transitioned to sound films and continued to appear in movies until 1947. He can be seen as an extra in several iconic films, including "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939) and "The Magnificent Ambersons" (1942). Despite his success in the film industry, August lived a modest and solitary life in a small bungalow in Hollywood. He never married, and there is some evidence to suggest that he may have been gay.

Edwin August Phillip von der Butz passed away on March 4th, 1964, in Hollywood, and is buried in Valhalla Memorial Park.
