Edward Norris, the son of a prominent gynecologist, Dr. Richard Cooper Norris, was born in Philadelphia. He grew up in a well-to-do family and was educated at the Culver Military Academy. At the age of 16, he dropped out of school to marry a socially prominent physician's daughter, and took a job as a reporter.
