Edward L. Montoro was a pioneering figure in the film industry, known for his work as a producer, distributor, and exhibitionist. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Montoro initially pursued a career as an airline pilot before a major plane crash in 1968 forced him to reevaluate his options. He went on to found Film Ventures International (FVI) in Atlanta, Georgia in 1969, which played a significant role in establishing the state's film production industry.
Montoro's early success came with the 1970 film "Getting Into Heaven," a "sexploitation" comedy that gained a following. He went on to produce and distribute a string of exploitation films, "B" horror pictures, and Italian westerns and crime thrillers, many of which became cult classics. His most successful effort as a producer was "Grizzly" (1976),a ripoff of "Jaws" that earned over $30 million worldwide on a budget of $750,000.
Montoro's career was marked by controversy, including lawsuits over copyright infringement and disputes with directors and producers. He continued to produce and distribute films throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "Shock," "Hometown U.S.A.," and "The Dark." In 1982, he formed Artists Releasing Corporation, which released films such as "Mortuary" and "The House on Sorority Row."
Montoro's personal life was also marked by turmoil, including a messy divorce and financial struggles. He disappeared in 1984, taking several million dollars from Film Ventures International's coffers with him. The company eventually collapsed, and Montoro's legacy remains shrouded in mystery.
