Born on July 9, 1927, in Malden, Massachusetts, Ed Ames, also known as Urick, was one of nine children to Ukrainian Jewish parents. Despite being raised in poverty, Ed and his brother Joe attended Boston Public Latin School, where they fostered their passion for music. The Ames Brothers, consisting of Ed, Vic, Gene, and Joe, were formed in 1947 in Boston and quickly gained recognition by winning numerous amateur contests.
