Duane Howard, a First Nation born in the Nuu-chah-nulth territory on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, has come a long way from his troubled youth.
At the age of 14, after his parents' separation, Duane left Vancouver with his older sister, and he began using drugs and alcohol. He lived on the streets for four years, and many times during this period, he considered giving up.
However, Duane's life took a turn when he realized he didn't want his son to follow in his footsteps. At the age of 23, he decided to change his life and got clean and sober. He went on to receive his grade twelve education and later earned a diploma in Substance Abuse Counseling.
Duane used his experience to work with troubled youth and their families, making a positive impact in their lives. He also discovered a passion for acting, starting as a background performer and later acquiring stunt and acting credits.
Duane's recent role in The Revenant, as the lead native warrior 'Elk Dog', is a testament to his perseverance and dedication. He had initially taken a break from acting, but when his agent called about the role, he returned to the business and landed the part after a four-day audition process.
Duane is grateful for his journey, which included his childhood addictions, near-death experiences, recovery, education, and training. He is at peace and grateful for his three children and the support of his agent, Linda Carter, and Canadian Casting Director Michelle Allen.
