Biography

Dimitar Mitovski was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where he began painting at a young age. He was accepted to the Professional Scenic Arts High School in Plovdiv, graduating in the early 1980s. During his time at school, Mitovski created his first short animation film, "Absurd", which received an award at a short film festival and was later re-shot professionally on 35mm at the Bulgarian Animation Studios.

Mitovski's passion for music was instrumental in his future career as a music video director. He formed an electric-rock band, "Band Falconeti Electric", with his classmates, which recorded two unreleased albums. He continued his education at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts "Krastyo Sarafov", specializing in directing for film and animation under Professor Donyo Donev.

Mitovski's breakthrough came while still a student with the video "Composer" for the legendary Bulgarian pop-rock band FSB. His innovative vision soon made it the most popular and beloved music video in the country. He went on to direct music videos and commercials, winning many local and international awards for his work.

His first major fiction film recognition came in 2005 with his short film "Get the Rabbit Back", co-directed with Kamen Kalev, which was nominated for the Critics' Week at the Cannes Film Festival. The follow-up short, "Rabbit Troubles", was also nominated for the Critics' Week in 2007. The two shorts are part of a surreal trilogy with thriller elements, with the third film in pre-production.

Mitovski's first feature film, "Mission London", an eccentric political satire based on Alek Popov's novel of the same name, opened on April 16, 2010 and topped the Bulgarian box office, becoming the highest grossing 2D film in Bulgaria since the fall of Communism in 1989.

As a producer, Mitovski is among the founding producers of SIA Corp. and Camera Ltd, two of the most successful film and television production companies in Bulgaria. Besides feature films, the portfolio of the companies includes over 2000 commercial videos and productions of some of the most popular international non-scripted television formats.

Mitovski is also a co-founder of the Artists' Group "Egde" in 1989 and "Disco 95" in 1995, both of which are emblematic for the contemporary "unconventional" Bulgarian art movement of the 1990s and 2000s.
