The esteemed professor emeritus and director of theater, a renowned English teacher who first set foot at Wichita State university in 1958, began his journey by instructing students in the English language.
As his passion for the performing arts grew, he transitioned to the drama department in 1961, where he dedicated himself to directing an astonishing 150 productions and taking on over 200 roles, ultimately contributing to the establishment of a thriving theater arts program.
Following a remarkable career spanning three decades, he retired in 1991, proudly guiding many of his students towards illustrious careers in the entertainment industry.
A master of his craft, Welsbacher held a master's degree in theater from the University of Denver and a bachelor's degree in theater arts from Denison University, where he collaborated with a talented group of actors who went on to achieve great success on stage and screen.
Throughout his illustrious career, Welsbacher showcased his impressive acting abilities on Wichita stages, as well as in stage and film productions across the country, including a notable touring performance with his wife Betty in the school program Folklore in Song and Story.
Despite his numerous accomplishments as an actor, it was his authentic, genuine roles in life that held the greatest significance to him. A World War II veteran who proudly served in the U.S. Navy, Welsbacher was a devoted husband, father, and educator, whose compelling presence and inspiring teaching style left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
