Dharmendra Deol, popularly known as "Garam" Dharam, is one of the biggest stars of Indian cinema. Born on December 9, 1935, in Phagwara, Punjab, India, to Kewal Kishan Singh Deol and Satwant Kaur, Dharmendra is a Jat Sikh from a farming family.
Dharmendra's early life was spent in his village, Sahnewal, where he studied at Government Senior Secondary School at Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana. He completed his intermediate from Ramgarhia College, Phagwara in 1952.
Dharmendra's entry into films was through the Filmfare new talent contest, which he won and subsequently moved to Mumbai. He made his debut with Arjun Hingorani's Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960). He quickly gained popularity as a romantic hero, playing the lead opposite senior actresses like Meena Kumari, Nutan, and Mala Sinha.
However, it was his breakthrough performance in Phool Aur Patthar (1966) that established him as an action hero. He went on to cement his image as an action hero with films like Seeta Aur Geeta (1972),Raja Jani (1972),Jugnu (1973),and Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973).
Dharmendra's most notable pairing was with Hema Malini, with whom he did 35 films, including hits like Tum Haseen Mein Jawan, Sharafat, Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, and Sholay. He also had a successful pairing with Asha Parekh, with whom he did five films.
Dharmendra's peak period was the 1971-1979, where he did multi-star as well as solo hero films in action and comedy genres. He was critically acclaimed and commercially successful during this period.
In the 1980s, Dharmendra diversified into production and launched his elder son Sunny Deol in Betaab (1983),which was a huge hit. He went on to produce several successful films, including Ghayal (1990) and Barsaat (1995).
Dharmendra's commercial hits in the 1990s included Veeru Dada, Naka Bandi, Farishtay, Tehalka, Kshatriya, Maidan E Jung, and Dharma Karma. He made a comeback to A-grade films with a role in Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya (1998) and later acted in films like Life in a... Metro (2007),Apne (2007),Johnny Gaddaar (2007),Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011),and Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 (2013).
Dharmendra has received several honors for his contribution to cinema, including the Lifetime Achievement Award by Filmfare in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2012.
