David Keith Miller was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and celebrated his bar mitzvah in the same city. At the age of 15, his parents relocated to Sunnyvale, California, and he naturally decided to follow them. He pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in Philosophy at Stanford University, simultaneously taking on leading roles in various stage productions on campus and in regional theaters across the Bay Area. Upon graduating, instead of opting for a traditional path and attending law school, Miller opted for a more unconventional route and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting from Yale University. During his time at Yale, he unfortunately lost a significant amount of money to fellow alumni Tony Shalhoub, Mark Linn-Baker, and Fred Melamed in a series of high-stakes poker games.
Following his graduation, Miller moved to New York City and adopted the stage name David Asher. He went on to sing and dance in various stage productions, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Merlin, and Canterbury Tales, both on and off Broadway. However, his singing career was cut short due to a vocal injury, which ultimately led him to transition into a career as a writer. Despite this, Miller continued to act in various productions, including a tour of Japan and regional theater performances with Tadashi Suzuki's Shakespeare adaptation, The Tale of Lear, as well as a role as Trigorin in the infamous, unreleased Roger Corman version of The Fantastic Four.
Today, Miller focuses primarily on writing and producing, although he has not ruled out the possibility of casting himself in one of his own projects in the future. However, he acknowledges that this might potentially harm the film.
