David Gilna is a multi-talented individual who has made name a for himself in the world of theatre and beyond. Born in Swords, Co. Dublin, David began his creative journey after being struck by lightning on a sunny day in South Boston, an event that sparked his passion for writing.
David's early work included writing his first play, "5 NIGHTS," which was directed by Simon Hubbard and premiered at the Samuel Beckett Theatre, Trinity College, Dublin. The play received critical acclaim and went on to have a successful run at the Axis Theatre, transferring to a national tour.
David's subsequent plays, including "GIFT OF LIGHTNING" and "MY BEDSIT WINDOW," have also received critical acclaim and have been translated into Italian. His play "THE UNSUNG HERO" was commissioned by Dublin City Council and premiered at the Theatre Upstairs, where it received a sold-out run and was hailed as a "masterpiece" by The Sunday Independent.
In addition to his work as a playwright, David has also acted in several productions, including a professional boxing training stint in London for his role in "Kolbe's Gift." He has also worked as a shadow writer for Ireland's leading soap, FAIR CITY (RTE),and has optioned film rights to World Picture Films and Blue Pip Productions.
David has received numerous awards and accolades for his work, including being named "Ireland's Most Promising Playwright" by Hot Press magazine. He has also founded his own comedy company, Lightning Comedy, and has been awarded actor and playwright of the year by the Mayor of Fingal.
In 2022, David's new play "A Bolt From D'Blue" premiered at the Irish Arts Center in New York as part of the 1st Irish Festival, supported by Culture Ireland and The Irish Echo. The play received glowing reviews, with The Irish Echo praising David's "cheeky Northside timbre and a joie de vivre of 'wilde' abandon" and his ability to "charm the crowd with rollicking laughter."
