David Alford was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and grew up on his family's farm in Adams, Tennessee. His father, Ben Robert Alford, was a farmer and a Methodist Minister. David graduated from Jo Byrns High School, a small school with only 49 students, and then attended Martin Methodist College, where his father had also studied.
He later transferred to Austin Peay State University before moving to New York to train at The Juilliard School from 1987 to 1991. After completing his studies at Juilliard, David returned to Nashville in 1994 and founded the Mockingbird Theatre, which he served as Artistic Director until the company closed in 2004.
David then became the Executive Artistic Director of the Tennessee Repertory Theatre in Nashville from 2004 to 2006, and later served as the company's first Artist-in-Residence in 2007. Throughout his career, David has been driven by his passion for theatre and his rural roots, which have inspired him to write, direct, and produce several productions based on the history of his hometown.
One of his notable works is a compilation of his father's writing, titled "DANCE OF THE HOLY NOBODIES," which was published by Martin Methodist College. David also designed and taught a new Dramatic Arts Major at the college from 2009 to 2014.
In his personal life, David has two sons from his first marriage. He is currently married to Kahle Alford, and the couple splits their time between New York and Tennessee.
