Daniela Thomas is a multifaceted and innovative artist, whose creative endeavors know no bounds. She is a master of multiple mediums, effortlessly transitioning between directing and writing films, designing and curating exhibitions, writing and directing plays, and creating opera and theater sets.
Born and based in Brazil, Thomas's work has traversed the globe, captivating audiences worldwide. Her artistic journey began in the early 1980s at the prestigious La MaMa Experimental Theater in New York, where she honed her craft and laid the foundation for her future success.
Thomas's return to Brazil marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership with Walter Salles, with whom she co-wrote and co-directed three feature films: Foreign Land (1996),Midnight (1998),and Linha de Passe (2008),the latter earning the Palm D'Or for Best Actress at the Cannes Festival. Her impressive portfolio also includes numerous short films, including the notable segments Loin du 16e (2006) and Back (2018) from the Paris, Je T'aime and Half the Sky projects, respectively.
In addition to her feature films, Thomas has directed the features Sunstroke (2009),Vazante (2015),and O Banquete (2016). Her impressive repertoire also includes her work as a director for the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics and the Flaghandover Ceremony at the 2012 London Olympics, solidifying her status as a versatile and accomplished artist.
