Biography

D Stevens, a renowned photographer, has traveled extensively throughout his career, capturing powerful and poignant images that reflect the human spirit. Inspired by legendary photographers such as W. Eugene Smith, Margaret Bourke-White, and Lewis Hines, Stevens has dedicated his life to documenting the most pressing issues of our time.

As a photojournalist, Stevens has been honored to exhibit his work alongside some of the most iconic photographers of the 20th century, including Bernice Abbott, Walker Evans, and Dorothea Lange. His work has garnered international recognition and numerous awards, including the Foreign Press Club for Newsweek International coverage in Belfast and the Images of the Year Selection for the Time Magazine cover story entitled 'Kids Who Sell Crack'.

Stevens has also made a significant impact in the world of advertising, photographing over four hundred movie posters for major studios such as Columbia Pictures, Sony SPE, and Warner Brothers. He has worked as a unit/set stills photographer on over sixty five feature films, including 'Boyz N The Hood', 'What's Love Got to Do With It?', and 'Truman'.

In addition to his work in photography and filmmaking, Stevens has received numerous accolades and recognition for his contributions to the industry. He has been awarded the prestigious Hollywood Reporter "Key Art Award" as photographer for the Best Drama Poster 2001 for 'Love and Basketball', and has won the Southern California News Directors 'Golden Mike' Trophy for a documentary he produced on Soledad Prison.

Stevens has also been recognized by professional societies and official bodies, including the National Press Photographers Association, the Overseas Press Club, and the U.S. Senate. His work has been exhibited in over two hundred galleries around the world, and he has had numerous one-man shows in cities such as Paris and Los Angeles.

In recent years, Stevens has expanded his creative pursuits to include filmmaking, directing numerous documentaries and his first feature film, 'The Pet', which was released in 2006. He is currently developing a number of film projects, including documentaries and streaming movies and series.

Stevens' photographic archives are held at the Margaret Herrick Library, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which comprises over 30,000 images representing still photography for dozens of films, editorial essays, and special projects.
