Person Biography:
Chyna Layne, a Jamaican-Asian actress, was born to a Jamaican father and Filipina mother. Raised in Jamaica, Queens, and East New York, Brooklyn, she is often referred to as a young Diahann Carroll. Her passion for acting was ignited by her late Uncle Neville, who introduced her to the art of storytelling.
Early Life and Career:
Chyna began her professional training with the City Kids Repertory Company, where she performed alongside notable actors such as Robin Williams, Jasmine Guy, and Demi Moore. She then received a full scholarship to the Black Spectrum Theatre, where she led the company to win the Audelco Award for Best Ensemble in the musical "A Trip to Nowhere."
Education and Training:
Chyna further honed her craft with the African American Theater of Harlem, Negro Ensemble Company under the late O.L. Duke, and the Atlantic Acting School. Her education and training have equipped her with a range of skills, including martial arts, which she studies in the form of eskrima and wushu.
Career Highlights:
Chyna has appeared in over 30 independent films, two national commercials, and made her HBO debut in the made-for-television movie "Life Support." She has also competed in TNT's Dramatic Auditions Competition and has gained nationwide recognition.
Personal Life:
Chyna is a leader in her community, having volunteered and organized various projects to empower young people. She is a role model to the kids in her East New York neighborhood and has organized a dance team at the Brownsville Recreation Center called NSC (No Self Control) for young girls. Her ultimate dream is to build a full, high-tech community center in East New York that would provide jobs, childcare, education, and a safe place for kids to hang out.
