Biography

Noted musician, composer, and conductor, renowned for his multifaceted talents as a drummer, formed his inaugural band alongside fellow schoolmates, including the illustrious Ernie Royal, Charlie Mingus, and Illinois Jacquet.

Throughout his illustrious career, he had the privilege of performing in the esteemed orchestras of iconic figures, such as Lionel Hampton, Lester Young, Floyd Ray, Jim Mundy, Count Basie, and Charlie Barnet.

In 1952, he co-founded a quartet with the celebrated Gerry Mulligan, and subsequently led his own quartet, showcasing his versatility and artistry.

As a member of ASCAP since 1959, his impressive repertoire of popular instrumental compositions includes the timeless classics "Morning After" and "Theme from Gerald McBoingBoing".
