Biography

Born in South Dakota to an African American mother and Caucasian father, Charlie Buhler, a multifaceted director and photographer, is dedicated to incorporating her inherently multicultural perspective into all her creative endeavors.

With a passion for normalizing and adding nuance to underrepresented experiences and narratives, Charlie is particularly drawn to exploring the lives and stories of women and people of colour, which are often overlooked in the media.

Charlie's feature film debut, "Before the Fire", received worldwide distribution through Dark Sky Entertainment and is currently available to stream on multiple platforms, including Showtime. Her latest documentary, "Rosebud", is currently in post-production and follows the lives of three Native American hip-hop artists living on a reservation in South Dakota.

In addition to her documentary work, Charlie has also made a name for herself in the music video world, with her video "Black Superhero" making its global premiere in Times Square in January of this year.

Throughout her career, Charlie has received numerous accolades and awards for her work, including Best Music Video at the ADC Awards and Clio Music Awards, Best Innovation & Transformation in Film at The One Show, and a Webby nomination for Best Branded Content.

Charlie has worked with a diverse range of clients, including Robert Glasper, Target, Google, Snapchat, Calvin Klein, GE, Narciso Rodriguez, The New York Times, Andra Day, Kamasi Washington, and many more.
