Catherine's journey in the performing arts began with a two-year stint at the St. Martin's Youth Company in Melbourne, setting the stage for her future endeavors. In 1983, she embarked on a new path by enrolling at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA),where she honed her craft and graduated in 1985. During her time at NIDA, Catherine landed major roles in films such as "The Right Hand Man" and "My Brother Tom," showcasing her talent while still a student.
After completing her studies, Catherine went on to secure lead roles in several notable productions, including "Weekend with Kate," opposite Colin Friels, for which she received the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award in 1990. Her impressive performances continued with "Struck By Lightning" and "Redheads," earning her the best supporting actress award at the 1993 Asia-Pacific Film Festival in Japan.
In addition to her film work, Catherine has made a significant impact in the theatre world. Her notable stage credits include "Angels in America," for which she received a nomination for a major award, "The Crucible," "Crystal Clear," "The Imaginary Invalid," "Macbeth" (2003),"It Just Stopped" (2006),and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" (2007).
Catherine's television career has also been marked by success, with leading roles in "Water Rats," "Crashburn," and "The Girl from Tomorrow - Tomorrow's End." She has also made guest appearances, including a notable role in "The Secret Life of Us" in 2001, during which she was pregnant with her first child. Since then, Catherine has starred in telemovies such as "Emerald Falls" (2008) and "Call Me Mum," as well as Channel Ten's police drama "Rush" and Foxtel's new drama "Tangle."
