Caru Alves de Souza, a talented director, scriptwriter, and producer, was born in 1979 in the vibrant city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her creative journey began with a partnership in Tangerina Entretenimento, a production company based in Sao Paulo, alongside the renowned director Tata Amaral.
Alves de Souza's debut feature film, Underage (2014),premiered at the 61st San Sebastian International Film Festival and went on to receive the Best Film award at the Rio International Film Festival in 2013. The film was later licensed by HBO Latin America, showcasing her impressive work to a global audience.
Her second feature film, My Name is Baghdad, had its world premiere at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival and received grants from the prestigious Tribeca Film Institute's Latin America Fund and the Ibermedia Programme for its development.
Before transitioning to feature films, Alves de Souza made a name for herself with her short film, Family Affair (2011),which premiered at the Frameline Film Festival and was later distributed on DVD in the UK by Peccadillo Pictures.
In addition to her work in fiction films, Alves de Souza has also directed two medium-length documentaries for the Brazilian channel TV Cultura, as well as the short film The World of Ulim and Oilut (2012). Her documentary TV series, Causando na Rua, consists of 10 episodes and was broadcast on CINEBRASiLTV.
Alves de Souza is an active member of "Coletivo Vermelha," a collective of female audiovisual professionals based in Sao Paulo. In 2016, she curated the film event "The Dardene's Brothers Humanist Cinema" for the Bank of Brazil's Cultural Centers in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasilia.
