A former leading fashion model, standing almost 5'10'' tall, Carey was a highly sought-after model by top American designers such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father, a distinguished geologist, was voted Scientist of the Year in 1979 by the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, which led to her growing up all around the world as a result of his career.
As a result of her father's career, Carey grew up in various parts of the world, which later influenced her decision to start modeling part-time while attending the University of Colorado. Her part-time modeling career caught the attention of a representative from the Ford model Agency in New York, who eventually convinced her to move to France in 1980.
During her brief stay in France, she lived in both Paris and Bordeaux before deciding to return to New York to continue her college education and modeling career. Her modeling career soon took off, with appearances on the covers of renowned fashion magazines such as Vogue and Glamour.
In addition to her modeling assignments, Carey was a full-time student at New York University, where she obtained a major in literature.
