Burak Çevik is a multifaceted artist, occupying the roles of filmmaker, producer, and founder of the prestigious Fol Cinema Society. This esteemed organization has been instrumental in bringing experimental and art-house cinema to the forefront, through a series of meticulously curated programs.
From 2018 to 2020, Burak taught non-fiction filmmaking at Istanbul Bilgi University, sharing his expertise with a new generation of aspiring filmmakers. His own filmography boasts a trio of critically acclaimed works, including "The Pillar of Salt" (2018),"Belonging" (2019),and "Forms of Forgetting" (2023). These cinematic masterpieces have made their world premieres at the illustrious Berlin International Film Festival, and have since been screened internationally, transcending borders and captivating audiences in over 25 countries.
Some of the most notable screenings of his films include the esteemed institutions of MoMA and the Lincoln Center's New Directors/New Films in New York, as well as the Sarajevo, Thessaloniki, São Paulo, Toronto, Jeonju, and Vancouver Film Festivals, Istanbul Modern Museum, and Cinéma du Réel.
Beyond his work in film, Burak has also made a significant impact in the realm of video art. His thought-provoking piece, "A Topography of Memory" (2019),premiered at the esteemed Locarno Film Festival, and was subsequently exhibited as a looped installation at Lincoln Center during the New York Film Festival. This captivating work also made its way to the Toronto International Film Festival, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of experiencing it.
Throughout his career, Burak has been recognized with residencies at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, including MacDowell, Yaddo, the Nipkow Program, the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA),and the Bergman Estate. In 2022, he was selected for the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, and has since been based in Berlin, where he continues to hone his craft and push the boundaries of his artistic and curatorial practice.
