Bruce Detrick is a multifaceted artist, encompassing the roles of composer, musician, teacher, and poet. His creative endeavors span various mediums, including music and lyrics for theater productions, scores for documentary films, and original pieces for the Robin Becker Dance Company.
One of his most notable works is the musical "Crosstown Bus," which premiered at the American Repertory Theatre, featuring an original book, music, and lyrics. Additionally, his settings of Rumi's poetry have been showcased at The Open Center in New York City, while "The World Mass" premiered at the Union Theological Seminary and "Lamento Orfeo" premiered in Italy with an international cast.
Detrick's song cycle, "Circle of Songs," is set to be featured on a forthcoming CD. As a passionate advocate for the arts' spiritual roots, he has coordinated sacred music and dance retreats for the Omega Institute and the Sufi Community, earning the nickname Orpheus.
As a co-founder and executive director of The Tamarand Foundation, Detrick has dedicated his efforts to bringing roof gardens, children's play gardens, music, and the arts to inner-city children and adults living with HIV and AIDS since 1987. In 1992, he and his partner, Joe Mondello, were honored by the Municipal Art Society of New York for their "years of selfless work and vision of a time when we will find our way to compassion and healing in the AIDS crisis."
