Brigitte Fontaine is a renowned French singer, born on June 24, 1939. She has developed a unique style by blending various genres such as rock, folk, jazz, electronica, spoken word poetry, and world music.

Fontaine's early life was marked by her parents' influence as teachers, which instilled in her a love for writing and drama. She spent her childhood in small villages in Finistère and Morlaix before moving to Paris at the age of 17 to pursue an acting career.

In 1971, Fontaine became one of the 343 women who signed the Manifesto of the 343, publicly announcing her abortion at a time when it was illegal in France.

Fontaine's singing career began in 1963, and she soon gained recognition by appearing in several Parisian theatres, interpreting her own works. She opened for Barbara and George Brassens's show at the Bobino in 1964 and later created the play "Maman j'ai peur" with Jacques Higelin and Rufus.

Fontaine's collaboration with Kabyle musician Areski Belkacem began in 1969, and they created the innovative spectacle "Niok" at the Lucernaire theatre. She also wrote a series of works in free verse and prose, which became the show "Comme à la radio" at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier.

Fontaine became a prominent figure in the French underground scene, releasing a dozen albums through the independent label Saravah. Her music addressed various topics such as death, life, alienation, madness, love, social injustice, and racism, often with a sense of humor.
