Biography

London-born Geraldine Brianne Murphy, the daughter of Irish parents, embarked on an acting career after receiving an education in English and American schools. Prior to pursuing her dream, she attended the prestigious Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City.

In an effort to become more American, Murphy took on a unique challenge - she worked as a trick rider with a rodeo for an entire season. Her bold move gained attention, and she went on to "crash" the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus at Madison Square Garden on opening night in 1954. With her clown performance captivating the audience, she received extensive publicity, which ultimately led to her securing a job as a still photographer with the traveling circus.

This remarkable opportunity paved the way for Murphy's arrival in Hollywood, where she began collaborating with low-budget filmmakers Jerry Warren and Ralph Brooke, whom she would later marry. Warren and Brooke played a significant role in Murphy's early career, providing her with valuable experience and exposure.

Notably, Murphy made history as the first-ever woman director of photography on a major studio, union picture with her work on the 1980 film "Fatso". Her impressive cinematography skills earned her numerous Emmy nominations, including one win. Furthermore, in 1982, she received a prestigious "Scientific and Engineering" Academy Award, solidifying her position as a trailblazing figure in the film industry.
