Blake Mawson is a Canadian filmmaker who has made a name for himself with his captivating storytelling, unconventional characters, and striking visual style. He is a 2017 CFC Director fellow and has been recognized for his work in several prestigious film festivals.
Mawson's debut short film, PYOTR495, was released in 2016 and addressed the issue of anti-LGBTQ+ hate and violence in Russia. The film was a huge success, winning several awards, including the CSA's lead actor award for Alex Ozerov, and earning Mawson a Best Direction nomination. It was also nominated for several other awards, including the Iris Prize and the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival's Brigadoon 'Paul Naschy Short Film Award'.
In addition to his work in short films, Mawson has also directed music videos for several well-known artists, including queer country icon Orville Peck and Juno-winning rockers Crown Lands. His music videos have premiered on several prominent music and entertainment websites, including Vogue and RollingStone.
Mawson has also worked on several other projects, including a custom horror teaser for Mike Flanagan's series, The Midnight Club, and all six episodes of CBCGem's LGBTQ+ dark comedy, I Hate People, People Hate Me, which premiered at Tribeca 2023.
Mawson is currently developing his debut feature film, a supernatural thriller titled Perennials, with Wildhood producer Gharrett Paon. He continues to expand upon his distinct creative footprint globally, and is widely recognized as a talented and innovative filmmaker.
