Biography

Bayard Rustin was a pivotal figure in the United States Civil Rights movement of the 20th century, making significant yet largely unacknowledged contributions to the struggle for racial equality. He played a crucial behind-the-scenes role in the 1956 Montgomery, Alabama, Bus Boycotts and was the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. Born into a Quaker family in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Rustin dedicated his life to studying the principles of peace and social change through nonviolent resistance, influencing Dr. King's adoption of Mahatma Gandhi's methods.

Although Rustin's historical significance is well-documented among Civil Rights scholars, he never achieved widespread recognition due to the objections of many movement leaders to his open homosexuality. Following the boycott, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell convinced Dr. King to distance himself from Rustin, falsely claiming that the two were romantically involved. Dr. King later acknowledged Rustin's importance to the movement, rehiring him to plan the 1963 March on Washington. However, anti-Civil Rights activist and U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond attempted to discredit the movement and derail the march through homophobic attacks on Rustin, labeling him a "moral pervert" on the senate floor.

After the march, Rustin directed the A. Phillip Randolph Institute, working towards Civil Rights and labor equality, and became an advocate for Gay Rights. A talented singer, he released several albums. Rustin passed away in 1987, leaving behind his long-time romantic partner, Walter Naegle.
