Biography

Ari Aster is a renowned American film director, screenwriter, and producer, whose work is particularly recognized for its chilling presence in the A24 horror film genre, as exemplified by his writing and directing credits on Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019).

Born into a Jewish family on July 15, 1986, in New York City, Aster is the son of a poet mother and musician father. His younger brother completes the sibling duo.

Aster's earliest cinematic memory dates back to his four-year-old self, when he watched the film Dick Tracy. The movie's intense scene featuring a character firing a Tommy gun in front of a wall of flames left a lasting impression on the young boy, causing him to jump from his seat and embark on an impromptu six-block adventure through the streets of New York City, with his mother valiantly attempting to keep pace.

During his early childhood, Aster's family made a brief sojourn to England, where his father opened a jazz nightclub in Chester. The experience was enjoyable for Aster, but the family ultimately returned to the United States and settled in New Mexico when he was 10 years old.
