Antonio was born in Sydney, Australia, but spent a significant portion of his formative years in Europe, where he would later establish himself as a prominent figure in the film industry.
With a career spanning over three decades, Antonio has worked as a writer and director in the film industries of Europe, Australia, and North America since 1992. That year, he co-wrote and directed "On My Own", a film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1993 and received a total of seven award nominations, including six AFI awards and one Genie award.
Throughout his career, Antonio's films have been showcased at some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, including the Berlin International Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, the San Sebastian International Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Antonio turned his attention to documentary filmmaking, producing a series of documentaries for RAI, the Italian national television network. This experience marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration with UNTV, the United Nations television network, which has resulted in a body of work that sheds light on under-reported realities in South and Central America, Africa, and Asia.
Antonio's projects have received support from a number of prestigious organizations, including the Independent Filmmaker Project, the Tribeca Film Institute, Film Independent, and When East Meets West. He is a current member of the Writers Guild of America, East, and is based in New York City.
