Antonina Nikolaevna Shuranova came into the world on April 30, 1936, in the picturesque city of Sevastopol, which is located on the Crimean Peninsula, a region that would later become part of Ukraine, but was then still a part of the vast and sprawling Soviet Union. She was one of three sisters, a tight-knit trio of siblings who would go on to face numerous challenges and hardships in their young lives, all while being raised by a single mother who had been left to fend for her children after the untimely and tragic death of their father, Nikolai Shuranov, a brave and dedicated Navy officer who had given his life in service to his country when Antonina was just a mere three years old.
