Anni-Frid Synni Lyngstad, professionally known as Frida, was born on November 15, 1945, in Ballangen, Norway, to a German father, Alfred Haase, and a Norwegian mother, Synni Lyngstad. Her father abandoned Norway before Frida's birth and was presumed dead after his ship sank on the way back to Germany.
Eighteen months after Frida's birth, she moved to Sweden with her grandmother, Agny. Synni joined them shortly after, but sadly passed away less than two years later. Frida was raised by her grandmother in Torshälla, near Eskilstuna.
At the age of 11, Frida made her stage debut at a Red Cross charity event. She began working as an underage vocalist in a dance band two years later and performed with various bands for a decade. In 1961, she met her first husband, Ragnar Fredriksson, with whom she had two children, Hans and Lise-Lotte.
In 1967, Frida won a talent contest in Stockholm and appeared on national television shortly after. She then signed with EMI records.
Frida's early years as a recording artist were not commercially successful until the early 1970s, but she was well-known on the stage. In 1970, she appeared in a cabaret show with her fiancé, Benny Andersson, along with Björn Ulvaeus and his fiancée, Agnetha Fältskog.
From 1972 to the early 1980s, Frida focused primarily on her work with ABBA, releasing her solo Swedish-language album Frida ensam in 1975. During this time, she also reconnected with her father, Alfred Haase, through the German pop magazine Bravo.
In 1982, Frida released her first English-language solo album, Something's Going On, produced by Phil Collins. This was followed by the 1984 album Shine, produced by Steve Lillywhite. Frida then took a hiatus from the public eye, focusing on environmental issues in the early 1990s.
In 1996, Frida made a comeback with the Swedish-language album Djupa andetag, which remains her latest solo album. In 2005, her albums for Polar Music were re-released with bonus tracks, along with an expanded edition of Djupa andetag and a box set featuring a DVD of promo clips and a new interview with Frida.
Today, Frida leads a low-key life, dedicating herself to charity work. She has made guest appearances on records by other artists, including Ratata, Filippa Giordano, Dan Daniell, and Jon Lord. Her most recent recording is a new Spanish version of Andante, Andante, with Arturo Sandoval, which appeared on his album "Ultimate Duets" in 2018.
