Biography

Ann Hui's life story begins in China, where she took her first breaths in 1947, before making the bold move to Hong Kong during her formative years. This pivotal decision would ultimately shape the trajectory of her remarkable career in the world of cinema. After completing her higher education in English and Comparative Literature at the prestigious Hong Kong University, Hui embarked on an intellectual and artistic journey to the London Film School, where she spent two transformative years honing her craft. Upon her return to Hong Kong, she gained valuable experience as an assistant to the illustrious director King Hu, laying the groundwork for her own directorial endeavors. Subsequently, she joined the esteemed TVB, where she made a name for herself by directing drama series and short documentaries that captivated audiences. In 1978, Hui's talents were showcased in the RTHK series Below the Lion Rock, with her direction of three episodes garnering widespread acclaim. This milestone marked the beginning of her feature film journey, culminating in the release of her debut film, The Secret, in 1979.
