Andrew Gillingham is a multifaceted creative force, excelling as both an actor and filmmaker based in Canada. His acclaimed short film "Prawn" (2018) garnered numerous nominations and premiered at the prestigious Raindance International Film Festival, subsequently screening at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF),the Calgary and Edmonton International Film Festivals, and as part of CBC's Short Film Face Off in 2021. The film was distributed by Paris-based Premium Films across multiple platforms, including Canal+ France.
Prior to "Prawn," Andrew's earlier short film "Banana" made its debut at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival in 2018. His subsequent works include "The Weight," which screened at the Vancouver Short Film Festival, and "Matthew's House," supported by the BC Arts Council. In 2023, his short film "Cups" premiered at the Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival (an Academy, BAFTA, and CSA-qualifying festival),further solidifying Andrew's reputation as a talented and innovative filmmaker.
As an actor, Andrew has made notable appearances in popular television series such as "Firefly Lane" and "The Good Doctor." He is currently in production on "Wooden," a short musical comedy about a gay squirrel, and is developing his debut feature film "The Weight of Us," a deeply personal story about queer love, heartbreak, and emotional survival.
Andrew's work is deeply influenced by the likes of Mike Leigh, Andrea Arnold, Kenneth Lonergan, and Andrew Haigh. He found his calling as a filmmaker after watching Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides" in high school, and his films often blur the line between truth and fiction, using autofiction to explore vulnerability, queer identity, and emotional survival, all while incorporating elements of humor, music, and the strange beauty of being human.
