Biography

Andrée Debar was born on May 5, 1920, in Maisons-Laffitte, France, but spent her formative years in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where she completed her secondary education.

Growing up in a bilingual country, with an English grandmother, Debar developed a unique advantage - she became fluent in French, German, and English, skills that would later serve her well in her professional pursuits.

After completing her studies, Debar moved to Paris, where she pursued her passion for acting by attending the Conservatory of Music and Comedy, and later studying drama with Marcelle Géniat.

In 1949, thanks to the patronage of Jean Cocteau, Debar was given the opportunity to join a prestigious tour in Egypt, a experience that would have a lasting impact on her career.

Debar's early foray into cinema began in 1940 with a short film, and in 1946, she made her feature film debut in the two-part "They Are Not Angels" (1947).

Standing out from the crowd of starlets vying for attention, Debar's unique look, described as willowy and elegant, was only one aspect of her appeal. Her androgynous features, which added a layer of physical ambiguity to her on-screen presence, were a major draw for producers, directors, and talent scouts.

Debar's most notable roles were in two films directed by Jacqueline Audry, "La garçonne" (1957) and "Le secret du Chevalier d'Éon" (1959),in which her physical ambiguity was expertly captured.

Despite her talent and versatility, Debar decided to retire from acting after the latter film, opting instead to pursue a career in film production, a path she would follow until 1977.

In her later years, Debar opened an antique shop with her friend Sophie Desmarets, a venture that would occupy her until her death from Alzheimer's disease in 1999.

Despite her contributions to the world of cinema, Debar's legacy was largely forgotten until her untimely passing, a fate that she deserved not to have suffered.
