Alan Tang, born Tang Kwong Wing on September 20, 1946, in Guangzhou, PRC, was the youngest of four children, with two older brothers and one older sister.
His early education took place at the New Method College or the Sun Fat College, where he acquired a degree in Chinese History. Following his graduation, Alan entered the teaching profession, specializing in Chinese History.
At the age of 16, Alan made his first starring role in the 1964 movie "The Student Prince," which earned him the nickname "The Prince." This early role marked the beginning of his illustrious career in the film industry.
In the 1970s, Alan Tang's popularity soared, and he reportedly earned a salary of HK$150,000 per picture. During this period, he was working on multiple projects simultaneously, often producing and starring in films. For instance, in 1974, he starred in and produced the film "Splendid Love in Winter" alongside Chen Chen.
Alan's personal life was also scrutinized by the press, particularly his relationship with Janet, whom he met during his early days in the film industry. Despite facing challenges and living under constant media attention, the couple remained together, a testament to their enduring love.
Alan Tang's peak fame came when he moved to Taiwan and made numerous dramas and romances, often pairing off with Brigitte Lin during the 1970s. During this time, he made over 60 films in Taiwan.
Later in his career, after his star had faded slightly, Alan turned to producing films, including two Wong Kar-wai projects, "As Tears Go By" and "Days of Being Wild." He continued to appear in films, primarily in the triad genre, in movies such as "Flaming Brothers," "Gangland Odyssey," "Return Engagement," "Gun N'Rose," and "The Black Panther Warriors."
