Mitsuha, a straightforward high school girl, is the daughter of a small town's mayor, living with her sister and grandmother. She's disinterested in Shinto rituals and her father's electoral campaign, instead dreaming of leaving the town for Tokyo. Taki, a Tokyo high school boy, works part-time in an Italian restaurant and aspires to be an architect or artist. Every night, he has a strange dream where he becomes a high school girl in a small mountain town.
