The Lowry family, consisting of Tom, Karen, and their two children Liz and Widdy, move to Placerville, California, and are taken in by a clever and lovable stray golden retriever named Pilot. Soon, Pilot becomes pregnant, and the family grows close to the puppies during their weaning period. However, Tom insists on giving away the puppies after they're weaned, which is difficult for Liz and Widdy. Despite this, the family manages to find new homes for the puppies, but Pilot is determined to get her puppies back.
