Tracy Powell, an Indiana farmer, leaves his first partner and embarks on a journey to California in 1849 to seek gold. He eventually marries Julie and starts a family, but his gold fever returns and he abandons his loved ones to search for riches. After years of unsuccessful prospecting, Powell returns home to find his wife and son have moved on with their lives. Despite this, he remains determined to find his big strike and vows to continue prospecting in the spring.
