In medieval France, a young gypsy is falsely accused of murder by a ruthless Chief Justice who conceals a secret obsession for her.
King Louis XI and Chief Justice Frollo are central figures in the story. Frollo becomes obsessed with gypsy girl Esmeralda after spotting her in the church, leading to a series of events that result in her being accused of murder and sentenced to death.
