Ivan, a hardworking and nostalgic Russian, forms a complex bond with Alexi, a struggling musician and drunkard, after Alexi fails to pay his taxi fare. As their relationship unfolds, Ivan tries to make Alexi repay him by forcing him into day labor, but it's to no avail. Years later, Alexi's jazz career takes off, and he becomes a celebrity after a US tour. When Alexi returns to Russia, Ivan is left longing to rekindle their friendship.
