In the spring of 1941, a New York City taxi driver named Malowski enlists in the military, bringing his taxi, Betsy, to Fort Knox, Kentucky. Despite his enthusiasm, a sergeant reports Malowski for having the taxi on the post, and the commander orders him to get rid of it. Malowski hides Betsy in an old shed, and the maneuvers begin.
