In occupied France during World War II, Marie Latour, a woman with limited education, struggles to raise two children in a poor flat. When her husband Paul returns from German captivity, he's too weak to work, and Marie finds a way to make money by performing abortions using a soapy water douche. Many of her clients are German soldiers who impregnated French women. Marie's income grows, and she's able to improve her family's living conditions, but her husband's humiliation and resentment deepen. Meanwhile, she secretly rents out her flat to prostitutes during the day and harbors dreams of becoming a singer.
