Undercover Army investigator Haven, played by Dick Powell, infiltrates a small frontier outpost to solve the murders of two cavalrymen. Disguised as a regular, he gets a job with saloon singer Charlie, who runs the town's illegal activities, waiting for the right moment to gather evidence against her. Meanwhile, Burl Ives, cast as a hotel keeper, takes a moment to serenade with a ballad.
