Cindy Campbell, a newly unemployed woman, takes a caretaking job at a haunted house, where she encounters the ghost of a young boy. Meanwhile, Tom Ryan, a crane operator, is struggling to connect with his teenage son Robbie and young daughter Rachel during a weekend together. Cindy and Tom meet and fall in love, but their budding relationship is put to the test when giant tripods invade Earth, forcing Tom to flee with his children.
