Thomas Wolfe's novel "Look Homeward, Angel" was accepted for publication in 1929 by Scribner's, despite his expectations to the contrary. The only issue was that the manuscript was overlong by 300 pages, which Wolfe reluctantly agreed to trim with the help of editor Max Perkins.
