Lankester Merrin, an archeologist and former priest, is sent to East Africa to excavate a buried church, which sparks his fascination due to its ancient origins predating Christianity in the area. Accompanied by a young priest, Father Francis, Merrin meets a young doctor, Sarah, and is drawn into an eerie atmosphere at the site, forcing him to confront his lost faith and ultimately face the devil.
