Elmer Gantry, a charismatic and liquor-loving salesman, joins forces with Sister Sharon Falconer, a charismatic preacher, and uses his wit and biblical knowledge to become an integral part of her revivalist roadshow. However, his past soon resurfaces, threatening to jeopardize his newfound relationship with Sharon, while also leading to a tragic conclusion when she finally establishes a permanent church.
